A lot of companies often ask us to take a look at there website structure as they know that the way their website is coded plays a large part when it comes to ranking high in the search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo.
If you’re missing crucial bits of code in your website’s structure your search engine optimisation strategy falls flat on it’s face, and that’s before you’ve even begun starting to think about your link building campaign – not to mention if you’ve already begun investing in SEO and your website’s structure isn’t set up right, you could be pouring money deep into the rabbit hole.
The good news is, the problem you’ve got is often easy to fix…
In this video I’ll be sharing with you the core things that you absolutely must have in place in order for your website to rank higher in the search engines.
The first thing we’re going to look at is the Title tag, which can be found in the header of all of your website’s pages. Each page should have a different title tag targeting a different keyword and should generally be kept under 60 characters as Google tend not to include anymore than that in their search results.
Meta Description Tag
Next is your Meta Description tag. This is the short description that gets displayed in Google’s search results underneath the page Title. Again, you can find this tag in your websites header section.
Like in the Title tag, you’re also going to want to get some keywords in here, preferably two. To make sure you don’t stuff your keywords be sure to use synonyms as Google are now pretty hot on this after their PENGUIN update.
In fact this goes for all of the content on your pages. When targeting a specific keyword or phrase, the use of synonyms will help you to stay under the radar and IF your site’s ranking took a slap from PENGUIN I’d advise you go back and check over your content and replace the overused keywords with synonyms, as this will help your site to come back up.
Your sites h1 tags are important too. Make sure you firstly have these on your page and your keywords are present in them. I’m not going to advise you to stuff keywords into your h1 and h2 tags but I would advise you at least have them on your page as this is the format that Google’s crawlers like to see. The crawlers are now more intelligent when working out what your page is about so, again, don’t stuff these with Keywords but make sure you have them.
Meta Robots Tag and Robots.txt File
Finally, and most obvious, but a major school boy error if not done correctly is your meta robots tag and robots.txt file if you have one.
If you’re new to SEO, I know that that might sound a little scary but all this is like what I’ve shown you. It’s a small line of code like this that tells the search engines whether or not they are aloud to list your site in their results. Can you imagine if this is setup to block them all?
Right.. so all you need to do is make sure that this is set to follow. If you see nofollow anywhere you NEED to change this.
